An incident at Victoria International Airport (YYJ) on the afternoon of August 2nd left the pilot and passenger of a small aircraft shaken but thankfully uninjured. The emergency landing occurred after the landing gear of their Yak/Nanchang (Nanchang CJ-6A) aircraft collapsed upon touchdown.
At approximately 5 p.m., the Yak/Nanchang CJ-6A, a vintage Chinese/Russian-developed plane, had just completed a flight and was returning to Victoria International Airport. As the aircraft landed, the landing gear unexpectedly collapsed, causing the plane to skid along the runway. Despite the dramatic nature of the incident, both the pilot and passenger emerged unharmed.
Rod Hunchak, the director of community relations for the YYJ Airport Authority, confirmed the occurrence and outlined the airport’s response. “The plane was damaged and had to be towed off the runway, but that was the extent of the incident,” said Hunchak. “Emergency equipment was immediately dispatched to the runway as per normal airport protocols. It’s very rare that something like this will happen, but it’s the sort of occurrence that can happen on rare occasions and it was dealt with through our normal procedures.”
The Yak/Nanchang CJ-6A is a notable aircraft with historical significance. This model is similar to the Yak-52, which has recently gained attention due to its unconventional use in the Ukraine conflict. Ukrainian fighters have been using these planes to combat Russian surveillance drones by maneuvering within shotgun range and shooting them down, despite the aircraft’s lack of armament.
Jeff Morris, a small aircraft pilot and the president of Sidney’s Angel Flight, provided additional insights into the aircraft and the incident. “The thing is, that most small aircraft have fixed undercarriages but the CJ-6A, which is a Chinese copy of a Russian aircraft developed back in the 1970s, has retractable landing gear,” Morris explained. “They are great planes, but something like this can happen. It’s just a good thing that no one was hurt.”
Incidents involving the collapse of landing gear are extremely rare, but they can happen. The retractable landing gear of the CJ-6A, while advanced for its time, introduces a potential point of failure that fixed undercarriages do not have. The ability to retract the landing gear provides aerodynamic benefits but requires more complex mechanical systems that must be meticulously maintained.
When such incidents occur, the response from airport authorities and emergency services is critical. Victoria International Airport’s immediate dispatch of emergency equipment ensured that the situation was managed efficiently and safely. The quick response minimized further risk and allowed normal operations to resume swiftly.
While the incident at Victoria International Airport did not result in injuries, it serves as a reminder of the inherent risks associated with aviation. Aircraft, particularly older models like the Yak/Nanchang CJ-6A, require rigorous maintenance and checks to ensure their safety. The incident highlights the importance of ongoing training and preparedness for emergency situations among airport staff and emergency responders.
The emergency landing of the Yak/Nanchang CJ-6A at Victoria International Airport was a rare and concerning event. However, the swift and effective response by the airport authority and the resilience of the pilot and passenger underscore the robust safety measures in place. While such incidents are uncommon, they remind us of the importance of vigilance and preparedness in aviation.
As the aviation industry continues to advance, lessons learned from incidents like these contribute to the ongoing improvement of safety protocols and aircraft design. The incident at Victoria International Airport is a testament to the effectiveness of these measures and the commitment of all involved to ensuring the safety of air travel.
